The Great Eastern Railway was formed on 1 August 1862, when the Eastern Counties Railway changed its name. The ECR had originally been built to 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge, was converted to 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge in September and October 1844.[1]

The first locomotive is a replica of GER Class H88 4-4-0 No. 1783 (LNER 8783, 2620/ BR 62620) to be named Phoenix. It is being built at the Whitwell & Reepham Railway in Norfolk. [62]

The other locomotive is a replica of GER Class M15 2-4-2T No. 789 (LNER 7789, 7218/BR 67218). It is being built at Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham. [63]
